On the walk together

Flowers from the Bishop family
Wally & Tim lend their talents
Rebecca is today's liturgist

A wonderful community
As we gathered for study, worship, and fellowship this morning, we are mindful of the blessing our autumnal weather presents us while parts of the nation were already getting snow this weekend!

The Chancel Choir shared the moving "My Shepherd Will Supply My Needs" for the anthem. Pastor Charles' sermon came from Luke 16:22-31.

Thanks this morning to: Jerry Beaber, Austin & Joan Cooper (Ushers), Bishop family (Flowers & fellowship), Jessica Bishop (Nursery), Tim Cook & Scott Glancy (Church school), Wally Cleaveland (Alpha & Omega), Lorie Courier (Accompanist), Rebecca Glancy (Liturgist), Ron Revier (Jubilante Ringers), and Christopher Wahl (Accompanist).

BUMMP Dinner

The good folk at First UMC - Lafayette hosted the annual fish & turkey dinner tonight for the Boulder United Methodist Mission Partners (BUMMP).

See you in the morning!

Sew What is back!

Visiting and sewing
Treats for the workers!
Chemo hats -- lovingly created by Joan C.
Great time at the gathering of “Sew What” yesterday morning!

Ladies of the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church met for a wonderful time of fellowship and celebration of what God is doing in our lives. Cooper, the sweet doggie, was overseeing our activity.

A big thank you to our hostess with the “most-est” — Joan C.! And a special blessing over the chemo hats that have been knitted with much love and care!!! Thank you, God, for these amazing women of faith!!!

‘Next Generation UMC,’ ‘Indianapolis Plan' Outlined at Gathering

Four bishops and Adam Hamilton talk about the future
For those expecting clear-cut strategies on The United Methodist Church’s future, the presentation of two major proposals proved that the future is still in flux – and will require lots of reading in the coming months before the 2020 General Conference.

“I hoped to come away from here with a clear idea on what these plans mean, but now I’m more muddled than before,” said a participant.

Since the 2019 special General Conference’s adoption of the Traditional Plan rocked United Methodism worldwide, this year’s session of the Leadership Institute sponsored annually by United Methodist Church of the Resurrection had been promised as the time when a concrete future scheme would be unveiled. Instead there were summaries about aspirations of two high-profile plans, warnings about the dire consequences of splitting the UMC, and urgent pleas to the General Conference delegates in attendance to read through all legislation involved before the 2020 General Conference May 5-15, 2020.

Annual event becomes forum on church’s future

Note: Pastor Charles attended this event.

A typical Leadership Institute at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection offers advice to church leaders of various denominations for growing their congregations in size and mission work.

Not this year.

With The United Methodist Church actively entertaining the possibility of a breakup, due to longstanding divisions over homosexuality, Leadership Institute 2019 turned into a centrists’ and progressives’ forum for discussion and strategizing about the denomination’s future.

“It’s about: Who are we, and who do we hope to be?” said the Rev. Adam Hamilton, senior pastor of Church of the Resurrection, the denomination’s largest U.S. church in attendance.

Scripture lessons for September 29

12th century icon, Mt. Sinai
The scripture lessons for this coming Sunday come to us from I Timothy 6:10-16 and Luke 16:22-31.

Three questions for this week:
1) How do you understand Paul's instruction to, "fight the good fight?"
2) Who are you in the Luke passage, Lazarus or the rich person?
3) What are you focusing on today?

Autumn arrives in Boulder

Flowers from Don & Peg
Ringing in the day
Autumn arrived today in the shadow of the Flatiron Mountains with cooler weather and warm feeling among the faithful gathered for worship and study.

The Jubilante Ringers made their return to the worship service this morning, sharing "El Shaddai" for the anthem. Pastor Charles' sermon came from Luke 16:1-13.

Thanks this morning to: Jerry Beaber & Austin Cooper (Ushers), Jessica Bishop (Nursery), Tim Cook & Scott Glancy (Church school), Don & Peggy Fritschel (Flowers & fellowship), Rebecca Glancy (Liturgist), Suzanne Polacek (Jubilante Ringers), and Christopher Wahl (Accompanist).

A prayer for autumn

Autumn comes to the Flatiron Mountains
God of all seasons, we thank you for Autumn.
We thank you
for the touch of coolness in the air that gives us a new burst of energy,
for the coloring of trees that shows the creativity of the Divine Artist,
for the falling leaves that reveal the strength of the branches,
for the hues of fields that bring peace to our souls,
for the smiles on pumpkins that bring joy to children,
for the fall harvest which that brings us gratitude for the bounty of our land,
for this change of seasons that reveals the circle of life.
God of all seasons, as you transform the earth, transform us by your Spirit.
Amen
— Rev. Doug Leonhardt, S.J.

The time is now

We understand more profoundly than ever the impact our actions are having on God’s Creation. Overconsumption and our misuse of resources have led to pollution on a local, regional and global scale.

The United Methodist Church has long supported action to address the present and growing threat of a changing climate. As scientific evidence confirms the scope of the challenge, our relationships in community deepen our commitment and inform our response.

Symbols of our faith #1

Pastor Charles has a large assortment of cross on the wall outside the church office that have been given to or purchased by him over the years. From time to time a different cross, and how it came to be on display at St. Paul's, will be shared.

This cross, done in a traditional mosaic style, was acquired on one of the Alkula's trips in Ravenna, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. Mosaics are found throughout the city and in particular the eight churches, shrines, and basilicas that gained Ravenna a UNESCO heritage designation.

It's time to begin thinking about Advent and Christmas!

Advent begins on Sunday, December 1 and you are invited to share in the season of anticipation and celebration with a devotional that will be shared with the community. The theme for this year's devotional is "The music of the Nativity."

Three easy steps:
1. Select one of the multitude of hymns, carols, or songs that speak to the theme of this special season.
2. Write a one-two paragraph reflection on what that hymn, carol, or song means to you.
3. Submit it to the office by November 3 either in writing or via email.

A sign-up list is available in Franz Hall. You may also call the office (303-484-0615) or email the office with your choice. If someone else has already chosen that hymn/carol you will be asked to make a new selection. Entries are needed for December 1 - 24. Pastor Charles will prepare entries for the Twelve Days of Christmas and the Day of Epiphany.

Print copies of the devotional will be available on November 24th. We will post daily entries on the blog and on Facebook each day of Advent (beginning December 1) and concluding on the Day of Epiphany (January 6).
