Unsung Heroes of Methodism

We’ve all heard the names John and Charles Wesley, but there’are a lot of other important names in the history of Methodism you may not know. The Unsung Heroes of Methodism series tells the stories of lesser-known figures whose lives and witness still impact The United Methodist Church today, even if their names aren’t familiar to us.

Sometimes a story that’s too good is still true. The story of Barbara Heck, “The Mother of American Methodism,” is one of those stories. Most United Methodists who’ve heard the name know Barbara Heck as the woman who saw her husband and other men playing cards one night, and in a moment reminiscent of Jesus in the Temple, angrily threw their cards into the fireplace and demanded they form a new Methodist society in New York City.

Wednesday with the Wesleys

Susanna Wesley bobblehead

"Whatever weakens your reason,
impairs the tenderness of your conscience,
obscures your sense of God,
takes off your relish for spiritual things,
whatever increases the authority of the body over the mind,
that thing is sin to you,
however innocent it may seem in itself."

Letter from Susanna Wesley to John Wesley, June 8, 1725

That's a wrap!

Another wonderful study wrapped up tonight with the discussion of the final chapter of "Sin." Thanks to Rebecca Glancy for leading this gathering each week.

Luke is calling you!

Show some love for Wesley Foundation!

And you can be a part of it!

This Giving Tuesday your donations can help sustain this life-changing work and expand our reach in 2024. Help us share the love this holiday season and beyond!

*Call to Worship (Psalm 95:1-7)...Amy Abshire
Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.
For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.

*Hymn...“All Creatures of our God and King” (UMH #62)

Litany of Thanksgiving: Christ With Us...Amy Abshire
(To be read responsively)
We delight, most loving God, in the continuing influence of Christ Jesus in this third millennium: Wonderful is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
In every stimulating advance we make, he is there, well ahead of us, asking us to go on in faith. What eye has not seen, or the ear heard, or the mind    conceived, God has in store for those who love him.
Whenever we are confused by the tough ethical decisions to be made by a citizen of this twenty-first century, Christ is with us. Seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness, and all that you need will be given to you. Love one another as I have loved you.
We delight, most loving God, in all that Christ once was, is now, and ever shall be.
Neither life nor death, things present nor things to come, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A Prayer for Black Friday

(Christmas bazaar at Corvallis (MT) High School)

Author unknown

Heavenly Father, we first and foremost thank you for the provision to be able to buy gifts during a time when the world’s economy is facing increasing uncertainty. But as we thank you for this provision, we also ask for knowledge, wisdom, and discernment so that we can be good stewards over the financial resources you have given us.

Do not let us exceed our budgets but let us stay within our budgets remembering that beyond the sales, on the other side, are people who could really use the money we would spend on gifts. Let us remember that our wants represent someone else’s needs.

Do not let the spirit of greed and consumption overtake us on this day. Let us remember that the Christmas season is not about buying things and receiving things as much as it is about spreading love and reminding people of the great love that came to the earth for us.

May that same love extend on this day. May we exercise patience in long lines; kindness in crowds and may traveling mercies be extending to us in traffic. Grant everyone safety throughout the day and beyond. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thanksgiving Day: A Modern Psalm

How easy to praise You, Beloved One,

For abundance, for cups brim filled;

How can we not delight in Your majesty,

Your endless blessings to us.

How simple our thanks, Beloved One,

For laden tables, for gathered families,

Shoulders touching in the intimacy of the meal

You have spread before us.

Teach us to thank and bless Your name,

When cups are empty and thirst is great;

Put our hands together to replenish,

Finding blessing in tiny sips.

Beloved One, to thank and bless You,

We find hope in uncertainty

And triumph in shaky steps.

We recreate abundance for Your sake.

Wednesday with the Wesleys

Communion at The New Room, Bristol

“Thanksgiving is inseparable from true prayer; it is almost essentially connected with it. One who always prays is ever giving praise, whether in ease or pain, both for prosperity and for the greatest adversity. He blesses God for all things, looks on them as coming from Him, and receives them for His sake- not choosing nor refusing, liking or disliking, anything, but only as it is agreeable or disagreeable to His perfect will.”

- John Wesley

UMCOR at work in the Holy Land

UMCOR is processing two new grants to support those impacted by the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza. One grant supports a partner providing psychological treatment and counseling to women and children and the other grant will provide telemedicine funding for mothers and children in need of follow-up care.

Recently, getting humanitarian aid where it is needed most has become more difficult. Please continue praying for the many who are suffering throughout the Holy Land.

Transgender Day of Remembrance prayer

God of love, You weep with us in our grief and fear. Enfold in Your loving embrace all those in our trans community lost to death this year. You know their names, Divine Creator, even when they are misnamed or misgendered as a last act of violence and erasure. You see each one as beloved and call them by their chosen name. You claim them as Your children.

God of peace, give comfort to those who mourn. Give courage to our trans communities in the face of cruelty and harassment. Bring to justice those who perpetrate this violence.

Challenge us, O Holy One, to speak out for those who are silenced, to stand with those who are bullied, and to go with those who face danger. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (based on Matthew 14:13-21 and Psalm 145:15-16)...Ben Glancy (to be read responsively)

Loving God, You are our Creator and Sustainer. When You open Your hand, You satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing. And so we look to You whenever we are in need, trusting in Your love and Your abundant goodness.

As You once fed the hungry crowds with five loaves and two small fish, we ask that You again fill those who are empty this day. Pour out Your Spirit on all who hunger and thirst.

We pray for those who are physically hungry—whose stomachs are empty. We think especially of the people in the world who are facing critical food shortages; who are suffering the effects of malnutrition and starvation; and watching helplessly as loved ones die. Lord, in Your mercy, open Your hand. Pour out Your Spirit, so that they may be filled.

We pray for those who are empty emotionally—who are lonely and long for companionship and love, who are caught in the grip of depression or overwhelmed with grief. Lord, in Your mercy, open Your hand. Pour out Your Spirit, so that they may be filled.

We pray for those who are spiritually empty—who are troubled, but don’t know where to turn; who long for purpose and meaning, but don’t know where to look; who need You, but do not yet know You. Lord, in Your mercy, open Your hand. Pour out Your Spirit, so that they may be filled.

God, we praise You for Your abundant gifts in our lives. Pour out Your Spirit on us as well. Fill us with Your compassion and love, so that we would willingly share some of our abundance with those who have need. Lord, in Your mercy, open Your hand. Pour out Your Spirit, so that we may be filled.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who came so that all of humanity might come to know the abundant life that comes from You. Amen.

2022 State of the Church Report released

NASHVILLE — The United Methodist Church has released the 2022 State of the Church Report. The report centers on how the people of The United Methodist Church have dug deeper into their Wesleyan roots to reclaim, revive and renew their identity as United Methodists.
