Wednesday with the Wesleys

John Wesley's study - London

Are you persuaded you see more clearly than me? It is not unlikely that you may. Then treat me as you would desire to be treated yourself upon a change of circumstances. Point me out a better way than I have yet known. Show me it is so by plain proof of Scripture. And if I linger in the path I have been accustomed to tread, and am therefore unwilling to leave it, labor with me a little; take me by the hand, and lead me as I am able to bear.

But be not displeased if I entreat you not to beat me down in order to quicken my pace: I can go but feebly and slowly at best; then, I should not be able to go at all. May I not request of you, further, not to give me hard names in order to bring me into the right way. Suppose I were ever so much in the wrong, I doubt this would not set me right. Rather, it would make me run so much the farther from you, and so get more and more out of the way.
Nay, perhaps, if you are angry, so shall I be too; and then there will be small hopes of finding the truth. If once anger arise, ηυτε καπνος, (as Homer somewhere expresses it,) this smoke will so dim the eyes of my soul, that I shall be able to see nothing clearly.
For God’s sake, if it be possible to avoid it, let us not provoke one another to wrath. Let us not kindle in each other this fire of hell; much less blow it up into a flame. If we could discern truth by that dreadful light, would it not be loss, rather than gain? For, how far is love, even with many wrong opinions, to be preferred before truth itself without love! We may die without the knowledge of many truths, and yet be carried into Abraham’s bosom. But, if we die without love, what will knowledge avail? Just as much as it avails the devil and his angels!
The God of love forbid we should ever make the trial! May he prepare us for the knowledge of all truth, by filling our hearts with all his love, and with all joy and peace in believing!

Bishop Oliveto's Holy Land Journey with the Mountain Sky Conference

Bishop Karen is  leading a final Holy Land Tour for the Mountain Sky Conference, February 19-28, 2024. It includes two options: the traditional tour (via bus) or walking the Jesus route from Galilee to Jerusalem. Both groups will meet up at hotels and various holy sites.

The life of Jesus takes on even greater meaning as we visit the places where Jesus walked, healed, and called the disciples to join him.  We will remember our baptisms at the Jordan, sing carols at the place of his birth, pray at the Garden of Gethsemane, and take communion together by the empty tomb.

We hope you’ll join us!

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before God’s presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord is God: It is God that has made us and not we ourselves. We are God’s people, and the sheep of the Lord’s pasture. Enter into God’s courts with thanksgiving, And into the Lord’s courts with praise!

*Hymn...“All Things Bright and Beautiful” (UMH #147)

Affirmation of Faith (inspired by Matthew 25:16-20, Matthew 9:35-38)...Ben Glancy

I believe in a God who created all things and seeks for all to be in communion as God’s people.

I believe in Jesus Christ, who showed us how to share love and who commissioned us to go out into the highways and byways inviting all to be a part of God’s work in the world.

I believe in the Holy Spirit who leads and guides us into the world, then touches the lives of those around us in ways that make them receptive to love.I believe in the harvest and the call for laborers to receive and respond, sharing light and life with the world. Amen.

Jerry Lynn Beaber

July 29, 1940 - July 1, 2023

Prelude

Gathering...Dying, Christ destroyed our death. Rising, Christ restored our life. Christ will come again in glory. As in baptism Jerry put on Christ, so in Christ may Jerry be clothed with glory. Here and now, dear friends, we are God’s children. What we shall be has not yet been revealed; but we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Those who have this hope purify themselves as Christ is pure.

Greetings...Friends, we have gathered here to praise God and to witness to our faith as we celebrate the life of Jerry Beaber. We come together in grief, acknowledging our human loss. May God grant us grace, that in pain we may find comfort, in sorrow hope, in death resurrection.

Prayer...Eternal God, we praise You for the great company of all those who have finished their course in faith and now rest from their labor. We praise You for those dear to us whom we name in our hearts before You. Especially we praise You for Jerry, whom You have graciously received into Your presence. To all of these, grant Your peace. Let perpetual light shine upon them; and help us so to believe where we have not seen, that Your presence may lead us through our years and bring us at last with them into the joy of Your home not made with human hands but eternal in the heavens; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn...“O Little Town of Bethlehem” (UMH #230)

First Lesson...Revelation 21:1-7

Hymn...“On Eagle’s Wings” (UMH #143)

Psalm 23 (KJV)... The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Anthem...Jubilante Ringers / “Sheltering Wings,” by Dan R. Edwards

Gospel Lesson...John 14:1-4, 18-19, 25-27

Celebration of Life...John Allum, Kent Beaber, Kevin Beaber, Kristy Beaber Greco, Kathy Lloyd, Myrle Myers, and Jim & Joey Vander Vorste

Commendation... O God, all that You have given us is Yours. As first You gave Jerry to us, now we give Jerry back to You. Receive Jerry into the arms of Your mercy. Raise Jerry up with all Your people. Receive us also, and raise us into a new life. Help us to love and serve You in this world so that we may enter into Your joy in the world to come. Amen.

Hymn...“O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” (UMH #57)

Closing prayer...Kristy Greco

As you leave this place, may the Living Christ go with you; may He go before you, to show you the way; behind you, to encourage you; beside you, to befriend you; above you, to watch over you; below you, to lift you up in times of sorrows; and may He live within you, to give faith, hope, love, and everlasting peace. In Jesus name I pray this, for each of you until we meet again. Amen.

Postlude...Jubilante Ringers / “Amazing Grace”

Today in Methodist History

On this day in 1707, Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon was born. She was an early supporter and follower of Wesley, and she later followed George Whitefield’s more Calvinist teachings (vs John Wesley’s Arminian beliefs). As well as establishing many chapels in England, she helped fund the building of chapels and missionary work in America.

*Call to Worship...Ben Glancy

Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth! He subdued peoples under us and nations under our feet. He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises, for He is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm God reigns over the nations, God sits on his holy throne. The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham, For the shields of the earth belong to God: He is highly exalted!

*Hymn...“When Morning Gilds the Sky” (UMH #185)

Almost a Creed (inspired by Psalm 20)...Ben Glancy

Do we believe? Yes, in spite of ourselves, we do believe! While some follow fad and fashion, changing the man from Nazareth. While some put their hope in a big lotto win or chase profits no matter what the cost to family, we put our hope in loving one another as our Christ has loved us. While some may give in to a sophisticated cynicism or fall into apathy or despair, we put our faith in the God who has given us the only true son. While some may boast of their superior education, culture, race, or living standard, we boast in the self-giving of that Son on a Cross. While some try to justify themselves by prizing fame or power or by claiming superior morals, we allow the grace of our Lord Jesus to be our best prize. Because of Jesus, yes, we believe in the living God by whose Holy Spirit all things are open to change and renewal. And that includes us and the church, thanks be to God!

Efforts for regionalization move forward

A plan to put the different geographic regions of The United Methodist Church on equal footing has received two key endorsements that it is heading in the right direction.

The Connectional Table, meeting online on July 13, and the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters, meeting online on July 22, each unanimously affirmed the work so far on a regionalization proposal for the global denomination.

The Connectional Table coordinates denomination-wide mission, resources and ministries. The standing committee is a permanent committee of General Conference, the denomination’s top lawmaking assembly, and deals with matters in central conferences — seven church regions in Africa, Europe and the Philippines. The standing committee is the most internationally representative body in the denomination outside of General Conference.

Together, the two United Methodist leadership bodies in February agreed to form a joint task force to combine two regionalization proposals that aim to provide parity between the U.S. and the central conferences. The successive July meetings gave both bodies a chance to review the task force’s work.

Wednesday with the Wesleys

On April 2, 1739, the day John Wesley first preached outdoors, he recorded in his journal —

At four in the afternoon, I submitted to be more vile and proclaimed in the highways the glad tidings of salvation, speaking from a little eminence in a ground adjoining to the city, to about three thousand people. The Scripture on which I spoke was this (is it possible anyone should be ignorant that it is fulfilled in every true minister of Christ?): ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19).’”

EarthKeepers training

Did you know that a UM EarthKeepers Training will be held right here in the Mountain Sky Conference in October 2023? Global Ministries seeks U.S.-based United Methodists to lead grassroots environmental projects that are action-oriented, antiracist, bold and entrepreneurial. Global Ministries EarthKeepers is a training program that equips US-based United Methodists to launch and grow environmental projects in their communities. Topics include eco-theology, antiracism, community organizing and project planning. All participants plan a project during the training. Registration is open, and more information may be found here: https://umcmission.org/EarthKeepers

Time Commitment: This training includes pre-training homework and in-person training. The pre-training homework will take up to 8 hours. It will be available starting September 15 and can be completed at the participants' convenience.

The in-person training begins October 5 at 5pm local time and ends October 8 at 1pm local time.

Participants are required to complete all homework and fully participate in all sessions of the in-person training in order to be commissioned.

Questions? Email environment@umcmission.org

This  Fall's training is at St. Andrew's UMC in Denver. If you have a passion for climate work (and i think you do because you are on this list!) please consider registering. You will need to think of a project. There are a lot of ideas  and some you might already be doing, you could potentially expand what you are doing ?

Xeriscape?  Community garden? energy efficiency? Develop a Sunday school series? Lead a Sunday school series? Sponsor a youth climate film festival? A Youth Art show? LOTS of ideas.
