Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Affirmative Action

A statement from the General Secretaries of the General Board of Church and Society (GBCS), General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR), and General Commission on the Status and Role of Women (GCSRW):

Today’s Supreme Court decision ruling unconstitutional the use of affirmative action is antithetical to the social teachings of The United Methodist Church. As stated in the Book of Resolutions, The United Methodist Church sees “the most fundamental premise underlying the concept of affirmative action is both moral and spiritual … According to biblical teaching, we are mandated, in the face of inhumane discrimination – whether that discrimination is intended or unintended – to do what we can to redress legitimate grievances and to create a society in which the lives of each and all will flourish” (2016 Book of Resolutions, #3373: Affirmative Action). The Supreme Court’s ruling will make the struggle to redress past injustices and advance equity even more difficult in our institutions and society.

As agencies of The United Methodist Church, we remain committed to the Wesleyan value of social justice and the social teachings of the Gospel as expressed in the Social Principles and Book of Resolutions and will continue to pursue inclusive and equitable practices in our hiring, programming, and institutional witness. We continue to believe “given the tenacity of many forms of racism, sexism, and ableism – both blatant and subtle – the concept of affirmative action retains its relevance as part of an overall effort to create a more just and equitable social system” (BOR #3373). And we will continue to reflect in our own practices and champion to the wider world the kin-dom values that seek to ensure access to and effective participation in all sectors of society for people of color, women, and persons with disabilities.

In response to today’s ruling, we will advocate for a legislative response that will rectify historic inequities and expand present opportunities in the face of continued obstacles based on race, sex, and ability. Furthermore, we will advocate for an active response by United Methodists and people of faith to support our constituents, educational institutions, and ecumenical partners who will be negatively impacted by today’s ruling and to recommit to our own practices of justice, inclusion, and equity in the church and society.

General Board of Church and Society

General Board of Higher Education and Ministry

Rev. Dr. Giovanni Arroyo, General Secretary

Wednesday with the Wesleys

Today is John Wesley's birthday. His birthday reflections give us a glimpse into how he viewed his life, health and ministry. On June 28, 1770, he wrote:

I can hardly believe that I am this entered into the sixty-eighth year of my age! How marvelous are the ways of God! How has he kept me, even from a child! From ten to thirteen or fourteen, I had little but bread to eat, and not great plenty of that. I believe this was so far from hurting me that it laid the foundation to lasting health. When I grew up, in consequence of reading Dr. Cheyne, I chose to eat sparingly and drink water. This was another great means of continuing my health, till I was about seven and twenty...; (He then speaks of various ailments.); Since that time, I have known neither pain nor sickness, and am now healthier than I was forty years ago! This hath God wrought!

One year later, he wrote:

This day I entered the sixty-ninth year of my age. I am still a wonder to myself. My voice and strength are the same as at nine and twenty. This also hath God wrought.

Annual Conference report: Africa University

United Methodists worldwide celebrated an ‘Ebenezer’ moment in the ministry of Africa University in 2022, marking 30 years of faithfulness, generosity, growth, and impact within and beyond The United Methodist Church.

God’s presence and provision in the life of Africa University are evident, thanks to the steadfast support of the Mountain Sky Conference. Thank you to Bishop Karen Oliveto, Mountain Sky Conference leaders, and member congregations for being attentive to the needs of Africa University’s ministry and giving sacrificially to ensure its continuing vitality. The Mountain Sky Conference led in giving, investing 100 percent of its share of general church giving to support the day-to-day operations of Africa University.

Supported by Mountain Sky United Methodists and others across the denomination, Africa University embraced new opportunities as it emerged from pandemic-related restrictions in 2022.

Enrollment: Africa University achieved a total enrollment at 2,791 students in August 2022. Female students comprised 58 percent of the student population and 23 African nations were represented. ● Academic Growth: Africa University launched its first new academic unit in almost twenty years—The School of Law—with a pioneer cohort of 20 students pursuing the Bachelor of Laws (Honors) (LL.B.) degree program. ● Infrastructure expansion: A new residence hall for female students at Africa University is under construction, funded by the East Ohio Conference’s $1.5 million Teach * Reach * Bless campaign. Once completed, it will boost the available on campus housing for students to around 1200 beds. ● Outcomes: 712 graduates from 18 African countries became Africa University alumni in June 2022. The university’s almost 11,000 graduates to date are making vital contributions as clergy, educators, agriculturalists, health professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators. Faculty and students are addressing endemic challenges such as malaria and tuberculosis, food insecurity, and climate change, and gaining significant international support for their efforts.

Africa University’s year-long 30th anniversary program culminated in October 2022 with a gathering of more than 3,000 people at its main campus in Mutare, Zimbabwe. Amidst the commemoration and joyful thanksgiving livestreamed to the world, the Rev. Dr. Peter Mageto was installed as the fifth vice chancellor (president) of the institution. Mageto, a Kenyan and academician specializing in theological ethics, echoed the gratitude of the students, faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni of Africa University for the many answered prayers represented in the Africa University story.

Thank you, Mountain Sky Conference, for nurturing change leaders and building an enduring legacy through the ministry of Africa University. Let us continue to journey together—learning, leading and serving God, all the time, everywhere.

2023 Annual Conference: Ordination service

The work of Deacons is celebrated

The 2023 Commissioning class

The newest Elders of The UMC
Pastor Charles joins the MSC clergy in song

Bishop Oliveto leads the way

View the Ordination Service at this link.

Following three days of hard work, it was time for the Mountain Sky Conference to celebrate and celebrate it did with a joyful ordination service!

The service began with a recognition of our common ministry and reaffirmation of our baptism. Persons being recognized as Local Pastors and sent out in service was next, marking this important link to our Methodist heritage. Seeing the seven who were presented for commissioning as Provisional Members of the Conference, five who were being ordained as Elders in Full Connection, and two whose ordination in other denominations were affirmed was such a thrilling sight for today's attendees.

Bishop Oliveto used her sermon to encourage the Conference to lean upon each other as together we embrace the challenges of our time and the strength we can take from our Connection as followers of Jesus.

2023 Annual Conference: Day Three

Pastor Charles & Kathryn Witte (Mission u Dean) at the
United Women in Faith's annual breakfast

Bishop Oliveto asks the 2023 class of ordinands the
historic Wesleyan questions.

Candles are lit during the Memorial Service

Rev. Jessica Rooks joins Bishop Oliveto in fixing the
appointments for the Colorado Front Range District.

This morning, Bishop Oliveto asked the historic Wesleyan questions of the 2023 class of ordinands, an experience that every elder in our tradition has answered. T
he retiring clergy then welcomed this year's ordinands and passed the mantle of leadership to the new elders.

The highlight of the morning session of Annual Conference was the Memorial Service for clergy and their spouses who had died since the previous session of the Annual Conference. (view the Memorial Service at this link)

In the afternoon, the District Superintendents presented the following churches for closure: Christ Central UMC (Denver, CO), Carter UMC (Carter, MT), Fleming UMC (Fleming, CO), Redstone UMC (Redstone, MT), and St. James UMC (Central City, CO)

During the evening session, Pastor Charles was formally reappointed to St. Paul's UMC for a fifth year.

A word from Bishop Oliveto

AC member hold light of welcome

Below is Bishop Karen's weekly message to our conference:

Greetings from Annual Conference! On our first night together, we released 38 churches that formally disaffiliated from The United Methodist Church. Below are the words I shared at the conclusion of the evening:
As we release these churches, we want the clergy and members of the disaffiliated churches to know we are holding you with tender prayers. May God bless you as you establish a new identity apart from the Mountain Sky Conference and The United Methodist Church and may God bless your ministries.
At the same time, I want to acknowledge the grief we hold in this moment. Our own identity as the Mountain Sky Conference has been shaped by your presence among us, as clergy colleagues and as laity sharing in ministry. We, too, have a new identity to establish as the Mountain Sky Conference. We, too, have ministries to strengthen, a witness to be even bolder as we seek to share the love of Christ Jesus in tangible ways across our conference.
If your church has disaffiliated yet you wish to remain United Methodist, you may transfer your membership to another UMC. If there are none in your area at this time, or you haven’t found the right church yet either online or in person, you may transfer your membership to the conference and we will hold your membership until you find a UM faith community.
I want to be clear that even as we change because there are some who no longer want to be in relationship with us as United Methodists, there are some things that are unchanging:
We will continue to serve our triune God.
We will continue to follow Jesus Christ.
We will continue to be led by the Holy Spirit.
We will continue to affirm our faith as Christians.
We will continue to ground ourselves in Scripture and hold it as an authority for our lives.
We will continue to allow our faith to be informed by the unique ways we United Methodists do theology, which is through the primacy of Scripture as informed by Tradition, Experience and Reason.
We will continue to be Wesleyan, grounded in grace, grace and even more grace.
We will continue to affirm our connectional system, knowing that we can make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world more effectively in our neighborhoods and around the world together than we ever could separately.
We will continue to ensure the dignity of every child of God, and make sure they are welcomed in our churches for who God has created them to be, not who we think they ought to be.
Within the DNA of our denomination as United Methodists are the stuff of schisms and splintering, yet also the stuff of reunions and reunitings.
Who knows what God holds for us, whether disaffiliating or remaining United Methodist. However, I do believe God seeks a unity that defies our own desires.
As I have held this in my heart and pondered this in my prayers, a voice keeps coming up, “I’m Tom Bodette for Motel Six, and we will leave the light on for you.”
With love,
Bishop Karen

2023 Annual Conference: Day Two

The Hospitality Area invited participants to linger!

Rev. Sandi Dillon and Bishop Oliveto preside
over the Clergy Session

The work of the Annual Conference

The business of the Annual Conference continued today with the clergy and laity sessions in the morning, multiple ministry area presentations, dozens of petitions to consider, and administrative votes to be taken. Among the items considered in the clergy session were the retirements of sixteen pastors with a combined 333.5 years of service (an average of 20.8 years).
Watch the video of this year's retirees.

The Conference voted to move from seven districts to six with focus on regional cohesion. The new districts (with the number of churches): Montana West (44), Montana East (53), Wyoming (34), Utah/Western Colorado (46), East/South Central Colorado (51), and Colorado Front Range (82) - this is where St. Paul's will now be found.

Other items of note:
In 2019 there were 376 churches in our conference, today there are 318.
In 2019 there were 60,792 members, today there are 48,068.
In 2019 there was an average of 32,339 worshipping in our churches each week.
In 2022, there was an average of 34,422.

70% of our churches worship with fewer than 85 per week.
50% of our churches worship with fewer than 50 per week.

2023 Annual Conference: Day One

First UMC - Colorado Springs

"The United Methodist Church is about to enter a new era. There has never been a more critical time for our local churches to witness and share the grace of God in our communities. Let us take one another's hands as we follow the leading of the Holy Spirit as disciples of Jesus Christ." - Bishop Karen Oliveto

The 2023 session of the Mountain Sky Conference began today with worship and the opening plenary.

Thirty-eight churches were approved for disafiliation from The United Methodist Church. Those churches are:

Colorado: Bristol UMC, Brighton UMC, Cañon City UMC, Dove Creek UMC, Eads UMC, Eaton UMC, Florence UMC, Granada UMC, Haswell UMC, Haxtun UMC, Holly UMC, Holyoke UMC, Howard UMC, Johnson Memorial UMC, Kirk UMC, Korean American UMC, Las Animas UMC, Limon UMC, McClave UMC, Marvel UMC, Meeker UMC, Ovid UMC, Peetz UMC, Pikes Peak UMC, Springfield UMC,    Swink UMC, Trinity UMC, Vineland UMC, Walsh UMC, Wilson UMC, and Yuma UMC

Montana: Monarch UMC, Saco UMC, Sun River UMC, and West Side UMC (Great Falls)

Wyoming: Pavillion UMC and Rock Springs UMC

AC members holding up lights of lament and welcome.

Edit (from Belinda Alkula): Yesterday, the annual conference began for the Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church. It was joyful to be together again, both in person and online. And it was a very difficult time when we had to vote to approve those churches in our conference who want to disaffiliate from our denomination.

At the close of the disaffiliations voting, we lamented. And then Bishop Karen Oliveto reminded us of what Tom Bodett, (from the Motel 6 ads) said about "we'll keep the light on for you." She reminded us of who Jesus calls us to be and told our departing siblings we’ll “keep the light on for you.” Our love and prayers go with them.

Wednesday with the Wesleys

But will "the creature," will even the brute creation, always remain in this deplorable condition? God forbid that we should affirm this; yea, or even entertain such a thought! While "the whole creation groaneth together," (whether men attend or not,) their groans are not dispersed in idle air, but enter into the ears of Him that made them. While his creatures "travail together in pain," he knoweth all their pain, and is bringing them nearer and nearer to the birth, which shall be accomplished in its season. He seeth "the earnest expectation" wherewith the whole animated creation "waiteth for" that final "manifestation of the sons of God;" in which "they themselves also shall be delivered" (not by annihilation; annihilation is not deliverance) "from the" present "bondage of corruption, into" a measure of "the glorious liberty of the children of God."
