Scripture lesson for September 22

Eugène Burnand
The scripture lessons for next Sunday are from I Timothy 2:1-7 and Luke16:1-13.

Three questions to consider this week:

1) How important is the parable to your understanding of faith?
2) When have you been shrewed in the world AND in faithful matters?
3) What do our choices say about our relationship to God?

Following fellowship time, the Trustees met, followed by the Church Council. Thanks to each of these faithful church servants for their role in the 'hands on' ministries of the community.

UMCOR starts efforts for Bahamas relief

A NASA satellite image captures Hurricane Dorian over the Bahamas on Sept. 1, as the powerful Category 5 storm was directly over Great Abaco Island. Dorian became the strongest hurricane on record in the northwestern Bahamas. NASA Earth Observatory image by Lauren Dauphin, using MODIS data from NASA EOSDIS/LANCE and GIBS/Worldview.
As Hurricane Dorian continued to threaten the U.S. east coast, United Methodists were connecting with Methodists in the Bahamas to start relief efforts.

The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church already is fielding requests to help those being evacuated from the “unprecedented devastation” to receive basic supplies and find a place to live, says its president, the Rev. L. Carla Culmer.

But the survivors also need someone to hear their stories. “We want to see how we can counsel and listen and be there for them,” she told UM News in a Sept. 5 phone interview.

UMW Faith Talks Invitation for 9/19/19

Do you know what it’s like to live on minimum wage? Can you imagine earning just $2.19 per hour as a waitress, yet still be responsible for clothing, feeding and caring for a family? Have you ever imagined having to stretch such limited resources and being forced to choose between health care and food or food and clothes? I am saddened that this is the situation in which far too many women find themselves today.

Our Christian text tells us that where two or three are gathered together, our creator will be in the mix. I am inviting you to join me and your sisters in learning about the living wage crisis and what you can do to help.

On Sept. 19, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. EDT, please participate in a virtual #UMWFaithTalks on Women, Labor and Living Wage with Carol Barton, the United Methodist Women executive for community action. Carol is leading our organization’s fight for paid parental and family leave, as well as the fight to ensure a living wage for all God’s children. Carol partners with UMW women across the country, as well as other social justice advocates, in this work.

Carol’s Faith Talk, a unique virtual chat, will be held via Zoom video conference and you can participate via computer or by phone. To register, click here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_BtxVcKg_RFmwB3sQeWJFqA. Upon registering, you will receive instructions for joining the meeting.

Understanding Mountain Sky Conference Mission Shares for 2020: Part 2

In the Aug. 27 Mountain Sky Conference News, there was an article about 2020 Mission Shares (apportionments). This follow-up article provides more detail on the eight funds that make up the General and Jurisdictional Church Apportionments.

As indicated last week, in 2020 the General and Jurisdictional Apportionments will be separated from the Mountain Sky Conference budget and the Mission Shares calculation. The funding for the 2020 Mountain Sky Conference budget will be done as we are doing it this year, but with the Mission Shares calculation changed from 13 percent to 10 percent of Adjusted Gross Revenue.
