Mission u: PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools

Join Pastor Melanie Martin-Dent for a Mission u virtual study that uses Monique Morris' book Pushout and the bible to raise awareness of the crisis faced by many Black girls in obtaining an education. As Christians, we are called to engage in mission through advocacy for the well-being of all.

This four-part series presents how even with obstacles, stigmas, stereotypes and despair, Black girls still find ways to breathe remarkable dignity into their lives.  Black girls from coast to coast tell stories of being pushed out of schools and into the juvenile justice system. Education is an important pathway out of poverty, yet issues of race, culture and gender block the path for too many. We will engage in conversation on how to reduce the criminalization of Black girls, that we may interrupt pathways to confinement for all youth. Please read the book prior to attending.

Registration will open in mid-June at the mtnskyumw.org website. Class is sponsored by Mtn. Sky Conf. Mission Team and Mtn. Sky UMW. Free and open to all adults.
