National Public Radio (NPR) recently reported that “The U.S. has the 32nd-highest rate of deaths from gun violence in the world: 3.96 deaths per 100,000 people in 2019.” This news story followed mass shootings in Atlanta, Georgia; Boulder, Colorado; Chicago, Illinois; Indianapolis, Indiana [and today in Rock Hill, South Carolina].
While mass shootings garner significant attention, they are but one type of gun violence. Gun violence also includes suicide, domestic partner abuse, community-based violence and non-intimate partner violence. Now more than ever, understanding and interrupting the cycle of gun violence is a public health imperative.
