UMCOR responds to fires in Texas
Devotional for February 29
Let all on earth their voices raise
To sing the great Jehovah’s praise,
And bless his holy Name:
His glory let the heathen know,
His wonders to the nations show,
His saving grace proclaim.
He framed the globe he built the sky;
He made the shining worlds on high,
And reigns in majesty there:
His beams are majesty and light;
His beauties, how divinely bright!
His dwelling place, how fair!
Come the great day, the glorious hour,
When earth shall feel his saving power,
All nations fear his name:
Then shall the race of men confess
The beauty of his holiness,
His saving grace proclaim.

Wednesday with the Wesleys
But what good works are those, the practice of which you affirm to be necessary to sanctification? First, all works of piety; such as public prayer, family prayer, and praying in our closet; receiving the supper of the Lord; searching the Scriptures, by hearing, reading, meditating; and using such a measure of fasting or abstinence as our bodily health allows.
Devotional for February 28
Are there not in the labourer’s day
Twelve hours, in which he may safely
may His calling’s work pursue?
Though sin and Satan still are near,
Nor sin nor Satan can I fear,
With Jesus in my view.
Light of the world! thy beams I bless;
On thee, bright Son of righteousness,
My faith hath fix’d its eye;
Guided by thee, through all I go,
Nor fear the rain, spread below,
For thou art always nigh.
Ten thousand snares my paths beset,
Yet will I, Lord, the work complete,
Which though to me hast given;
Regardless of the pains I feel,
Close by the gates of death and hell,
I urge my way to heaven.

Unsung Heroes of Methodism: Sarah Crosby
The Methodist Episcopal Church (a precursor to The UMC) first began ordaining women as full elders in 1924, but women had a long history of preaching and taking on spiritual leadership in the Methodist movement long before. In fact, the first true women preachers emerged in the earliest days of Methodism under the leadership of John Wesley. One of these was Sarah Crosby.

Devotional for February 27
O may I still from sin depart;
A wise and understanding heart,
Jesus, to me be given:
And let me through thy Spirit know
To glorify my God below,
And find my way to heaven.
There as our God we too would claim,
And bless the Saviour’s precious name,
Through whom this grace is given;
He forms their ruin’d souls anew,
And makes them heirs of heaven.
The veil that hides thy glory rend,
And here in saving power descend,
And fix thy blest abode;
Here to our hearts thyself reveal,
And let each waiting spirit feel
The presence of our God.

Scripture lessons for March 3
Sadao Watanabe |
We reach the mid-point of the Lenten season next week and turn to John 19:25-27 and John 20:16-18 for our lessons. We will hear about the experiences of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene from Faces at the Cross.
Devotional for February 26
Jesus, fulfill our one desire,
And spread the spark of living fire
Through ever hallow’d breast:
Bless with divine conformity,
And give us now to find in thee
Our everlasting rest.
O that we now the power might feel,
To do on earth thy blessed will,
As angels do above:
To walk in thee, the Truth, the Way,
And ever perfectly obey
Thy sweet constraining love.
Be it my only wisdom here,
To serve the Lord with filial fear,
With loving gratitude:
Superior sense may I display,
By shunning every evil way,
And walking in the good.

Prayer of Confession (Book of Worship #479)...Ben Glancy
Almighty God, we confess that we are often swept up in the tide of our generation. We have failed in our calling to be Your holy people, a people set aside for Your divine purpose. We live more in apathy born of fatalism than in passion born of hope. We are moved more by private ambition than by social justice. We dream more of privilege and benefits than of service and sacrifice. We try to speak Your name without relinquishing our glories, without nourishing our souls, without relying wholly on Your grace. Help us make room in our hearts and lives for You. Forgive us, revive us, and reshape us in Your image. Amen

Devotional for the Second Sunday in Lent
If I have only known thy fear,
And follow’d, with a heart sincere,
Thy drawings from above;
Now, now the further grace bestow,
And let my sprinkled conscience know
Thy sweet forgiving love.
Short of thy love I would not stop,
A stranger to the Gospel hope,
The sense of sin forgiven;
I would not, Lord, my soul deceive,
Without the inward witness live,
That ante-past of heaven.
If now the witness were in me,
Would lie not testify of thee,
In Jesus reconciled?
And should I not with faith draw nigh,
And boldly, Abba, Father, cry,
And know myself thy child?
Father, in me reveal thy Son,
And to my inmost soul make known
How merciful thou art;
The secret of thy love reveal,
And by thy hall’wing Spirit dwell
Forever in my heart.

Join us for worship
Devotional for February 24
What shall I render unto thee,
My Saviour in distress,
For all thy benefits to me,
So great and numberless?
This will I do for thy love’s sake,
And thus thy power proclaim;
The cup of thy salvation take,
And call upon thy name.
Thou God of covenanted grace,
Hear and record my vow,
While in thy courts I seek thy face,
And at thine altar bow:
Henceforth to thee myself I give;
With single heart and eye
To walk before thee while I live,
And bless thee when I die.

Move forward in spirit of Wesley
Feb. 23, 2024 | WASHINGTON (UM News)
A recent UM News article describes the ill-advised plans of groups that spent the last years attacking The United Methodist Church and trying to recruit churches away from the denomination. The article documents the groups’ plans to continue to affect the decision-making of The United Methodist Church as the denomination seeks to start a new future following these attacks to divide.
The period of disaffiliation is over. It is time for all groups to move on from dividing to unifying and disciple-making.
The upcoming General Conference is for those who remain after the chaos of recent years. All the delegates come with the responsibility to do only those things that strengthen The United Methodist Church. They have chosen to remain not because they all agree, but because they are willing to live together despite differences, knowing that disunity is incompatible with Christian teaching.

Devotional for February 23
Once more we come before our God;
Once more his blessing ask:
O may not duty seem a load,
Nor worship prove a task.
Father, thy quick’ning Spirit send
From heaven, in Jesus’ name,
And bid our waiting minds attend,
And put our souls in frame.
May we receive the word we hear,
Each in an honest heart;
And keep the precious treasure there,
And never with it part.
To seek thee, all our hearts dispose;
To each thy blessings suit;
And let the seed thy servant sows,
Produce abundant fruit.

WCA and Good News still lobbying
Good News and the Wesleyan Covenant Association used to operate as unofficial traditionalist caucuses within The United Methodist Church, advocating at General Conference and elsewhere on denominational policy.
But for the past two years, both groups have been encouraging congregations to leave The United Methodist Church for the traditionalist Global Methodist Church.
Though now clearly aligned with that new, breakaway denomination, Good News and the Wesleyan Covenant Association plan to be a lobbying presence at the fast-approaching United Methodist General Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.
That doesn’t sit well with some United Methodist loyalists.
“If you work for Pepsi, you don’t expect to be in the board room where decisions are made for Coca-Cola,” said Pat Luna, an Alabama-West Florida Conference delegate to General Conference.

Devotional for February 22
Jehovah, God, thy gracious power
On every hand we see;
O may the blessings of each hour
Lead all our thoughts to thee.
If on the wings of morn we speed,
To earth’s remotest bound,
Thy hand will there our journey lead,
Thine arm our path surround.
Thy power is in the ocean deeps,
And reaches to the skies;
Thine eye of mercy never sleeps,
Thy goodness never dies.
From morn till noon—till latest eve,
Thy hand, O God, we are;
And all thy blessings we receive,
Proceed alone from thee.
