Mountain View UMC Shoeboxes for Native American elders

This is blog post #4,000!

Mountain View United Methodist Church unit of United Women in Faith is holding a packing party for Christmas shoeboxes for Native American elders on Tuesday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m., in Barker Hall.

We invite you to join us for fun and service to seniors who may not receive another present for Christmas. We will plan to deliver the completed shoeboxes to One Nation Walking Together in Colorado Springs; this Native American-staffed nonprofit will deliver the shoeboxes to four reservations in South Dakota before the holidays.

What do we need for the project? Shoeboxes!

And anything that will fit in a shoebox: small cans of protein (tuna, chicken, Vienna sausages, nuts), granola bars, hard candies, hats, scarves, gloves, socks, bandanas, small fleece blankets, calendars, notepads, pencils, pens, paperback books, reading glasses, dishcloths and towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, travel-size shampoos, conditioner, soaps, swabs, cotton puffs, playing cards, etc.

We also need wrapping paper, tape, curling ribbon, and scissors so we can wrap the shoeboxes and have them ready for distribution. We will mark each box with a M or W to designate whether men or women should receive the shoeboxes.

You may have read recently that the contractor that is to provide canned goods to Native American reservations has fallen behind in deliveries (by months)! Many elders live 40 to 50 miles from the nearest town, so we are seeking items that could tide them over until the next trip to town.

Thank you for helping us to share the Christmas spirit with our friends in South Dakota.
