The historic September 2013 heavy rainfall and flood event occurred ten years ago. As we look back on that weather event, we will provide an analysis of the weather conditions leading to the historic event that resulted in the loss of lives, widespread damage to infrastructure, and resulted in billions of dollars in damages.
A very moist, subtropical airmass was situated over Colorado through much of the week, beginning September 9, 2013. On the evening of September 11, 2013, a weak disturbance helped focus the development of showers and thunderstorms along the Colorado Front Range. The heavy rain continued from the evening of September 11th through much of September 12th, before finally decreasing. A few showers and thunderstorms occurred during the following days, with the last period of locally heavy rainfall on September 15, 2013.
