Passing of Jerry Cantril

We are saddend to learn this evening of the death of Jerry Cantril.

Arrangements are pending for his service.

Conference spotlights Methodism ‘on the move’

When the clamor of a midday thunderstorm in 1885 gave way to cheerful birdsong and a brilliant rainbow, the Rev. Carl Gustav Boberg felt moved to write down his awesome wonder at God’s creation.

The result was the Swedish pastor’s most famous hymn, titled “O Store Gud” in his native language — literally “O Great God” in English.

The hymn journeyed from Sweden to Germany to Ukraine and eventually to England, where missionaries gave it the title most English speakers know it by today: “How Great Thou Art.”

In a similarly roundabout way, Boberg’s home denomination, the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden, is now part of the Methodist movement. In 2011, Sweden’s Mission Covenant members, Baptists and United Methodists — with The United Methodist Church’s blessing — joined to form the Uniting Church in Sweden.

So Boberg’s well-traveled hymn made a fitting opening when the Uniting Church in Sweden hosted the 22nd World Methodist Conference, bringing together Wesleyan-rooted Christians from around the globe.

Online offerings from General Commission on Religion & Race

As humanity’s understanding and discussion of the concepts of race, racism, and antiracism have evolved over generations, so have the words and phrases we use as we continue the work of obeying God and advancing racial justice.

In this “What Is?” series, the General Commission on Religion and Race (R2) offers this compilation of concise definitions, examples, and Biblical/theological foundations to create common vocabulary for Christians as we engage in anti-racism work.

Our hope, as you engage this series, is that the learning equips you to move into deeper waters in anti-racism work in your respective context.

Wednesday with the Wesleys

That faith whereby we are sanctified ... is a divine evidence and conviction, secondly, that what God hath promised He is able to perform. Admitting, therefore, that "with men it is impossible" to "bring a clean thing out of an unclean," to purify the heart from all sin, and to till it with all holiness; yet this creates no difficulty in the case, seeing "with God all things are possible." And surely no one ever imagined it was possible to any power less than that of the Almighty! But if God speaks, it shall be done. God saith, "Let there be light; and there" is "light"!

Radical Mental Health First-Aid Workshop

Traditional mental health first aid tools can be helpful to some, but for those with historically marginalized identities, the same tools– such as calling 911 during a mental health crisis– can have a harmful result. Radical Mental Health First Aid  helps us reduce the risk of harm caused to our neighbors by ourselves, our neighbors, by police, and even by well-meaning health care workers and professionals working in psychiatric fields and facilities. Facilitated by Oumou Sylla, Radical mental health invites you to join a movement that is radically reimagining how care is accessed and co-created. From Oumou’s website:

“Radical mental health is about community. Radical mental health is about people of the global majority. radical mental health is about liberation. Radical Mental Health First Aid (RMHFA) is mutual aid. RMHFA is harm reduction. RMHFA is non carceral. RMHFA is imbued with the energy and spirit of Teranga (“we invite you in with open arms. what affects you, what ails you, what reinforces you also affects me and my community. you are not alone. we breathe as one.”). for us, by us. RMHFA is for the people, communities, and businesses that want to give, receive and co-create care. Part of you knows it's possible, allow Joko Wellness to support you with the how.”

This workshop will teach you some of the skills necessary to support those experience a crisis/stressor in a trauma informed, embodied and consent aware way. You will learn de-escalation tips and strategies. You will also be offered non-carceral resources, tips, and tools.

Join us for Radical Mental Health First Aid on Thursday, September 19th @ 6 pm - 8:30 pm via Zoom. Click here to register for Radical Mental Health First Aid.

How UMCOR responds to disaster…and how you can help

For more than 80 years, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has alleviated the suffering of individuals, families and communities affected by both natural and humanmade disaster.

UMCOR journeys with communities throughout a disaster’s cycle, including disaster preparedness, relief, response, recovery and mitigation. It focuses on disasters that overwhelm a local community’s ability to respond, such as storms and flooding, earthquakes, fires, volcanoes, war and civil unrest.

Wednesday with the Wesleys

Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
Christ, the true, the only light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise!
Triumph over the shades of night;
Dayspring from on high, be near;
Daystar, in my heart appear.
Dark and cheerless is the morn
Unaccompanied by thee;
Joyless is the day's return,
Till thy mercy's beams I see;
Till they inward light impart,
Glad my eyes, and warm my heart.
Visit then this soul of mine;
Pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
Fill me, Radiancy Divine;
Scatter all my unbelief;
More and more thyself display,
Shining to the perfect day.

L: Do we believe?
P: Yes, in spite of ourselves, we do believe!
L: While some follow fad and fashion, changing with the seasons in Paris, London, and New York,
P: We follow the man from Nazareth.
L: While some put their hope in a big lotto win or chase profits at no matter what cost to family,
P: We put our hope in loving one another as our Christ has loved us.
L: While some may give in to a sophisticated cynicism or fall into apathy or despair,
P: We put our faith in the God who has given us his only true son.
L: While some may boast of their superior education, culture, race, or living standard,
P: We boast in the self-giving of the Son on a Cross.
L: While some try to justify themselves by prizing fame or power or by claiming superior morals,
P: We allow the grace of our Lord to Jesus to be our best prize.
L: Because of Jesus, yes, we believe in the living God by whose Holy Spirit all things are open to change and renewal.
P: And that includes us and the church, thanks be to God!
