+ABC's of Belonging webinar (Sep. 11, 9am) You can probably still remember it: the place; the words; the looks on their faces; the way it made you feel. No matter what else you’ve come to associate with that memory, you knew at that moment that you didn’t belong and it stuck with you. How helpful it would’ve been to know a thing or two about belonging back then—to understand what it really is, why it’s so important, or what most often prevents us from experiencing it. While we can’t go back in time, we do know a better way forward.

+Virtual blood driving coming September 12-25As you may know, St. Paul's UMC   partnered with Vitalant to host a blood drive last spring. With all of the changes we have experienced during the pandemic, hosting a blood drive on-site is not feasible for us. But, we are still committed to the mission of saving lives through blood donation, so we are hosting a virtual blood drive. This is your invitation to take part in this innovative event to support hospital patients in our community. Details will be coming next week on the blog and in the newsletter.

FAITH IN ACTION: An Early Response to Afghan Refugee Arrivals

A FAITH-BASED RESPONSE

Any immigrant who lives with you must be treated as if they were one of your citizens. You must love them as yourself, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.  Leviticus 19:34 - CEB

All of us, as disciples of Jesus Christ, share this faith history. We are called to make room, offer hospitality, to listen to the voices, to treat others with dignity, to value one another, and recognize that everyone is an equal member of the community.

Over the next days and months, refugees from Afghanistan will be welcomed into our communities. We will continue to learn and share ways in which you and/or your local church can learn how we can better “love them as yourself.” As we are learning, sharing, and practicing life together, please be vigilant of the following and practice disrupting harm:

  • Racism and xenophobia that may arise within our own thoughts and from within the community.
  • Implicit or explicit biases, especially Anti-Muslim sentiments that may come up.
  • Scarcity mentality that polarizes us into an “us” and “them” mentality (i.e. If we ‘xzy’ for them, what about us.).
  • The blaming of spreading COVID and/or diseases by immigrants and refugees.
  • Practice centering the voices and experiences of those who are directly impacted and not our own.
  • Being in community with refugees from Afghanistan is an opportunity to live out our faith and share our lives with one another. Our lives are to be a living testimony and witness of our faith, but our work is not to proselytize. (i.e. expectation to become members of the church.)

AN ECUMENICAL RESPONSE

On Thursday, Church World Services (CWS) met with over 60 leaders from a cross section of US partner denominations to discuss how best to respond to this crisis. United Methodist Church Bishops Minera Carcaño and Sally Dick were in attendance, along with Rev. Jack Amick with UMCOR. In her comments, Bishop Carcaño expressed her concern and commitment to work with the National Council of Churches and CWS.

UMCOR is also prepared to assist with refugee resettlement through its partnership with Church World Service. Those interested in supporting the UMCOR-CWS partnership can make gifts online here "UMCOR Global Migration" or by checks with Advance #3022144 in the memo line.

Checks may be sent to:
The Advance
458 Ponce De Leon Ave, NE
Atlanta, GA 30308

A commitment to prayer, advocacy, funding, and hands-on community response will be required in the months and years to come to fill the gap between refugee arrival and building stability for families.  Below are some resources on how to start. We will continue to share information as we learn of them. We also encourage to you reach out to Rev. Janet Mulroy at jmulroy@mtnskyumc.org or Rev. Bich Thy (Betty) Nguyen at bnguyen@mtnskyumc.org if you have any resources or wisdom to share. Also, please reach out with questions as we continue to learn together.

FAITH IN ACTION:  What we can do now.

  1. Build education and awareness on this issue. Below are multiple links to information on refugee resettlement.
  2. Attend the CWS webinar : "Welcoming Afghan SIVs", Monday, August 30th 10:00-10:45 a.m. MDT.  This webinar will provide an update on the current needs of Afghan SIVs, how supporters can meet those needs and how to advocate on behalf of Afghans.
  3. Watch for more information as it develops here.

An invitation to mission

Do you want to know how God has inspired us to act because of the Salt Lake City UMCOR Hub closing? As you may know, in 2017, following an inspirational mission trip to the UMCOR Depot in Salt Lake City, the United Methodist Church of Johnstown became an UMCOR Hub. Since that time many of you have helped with donations and the building of flood buckets, hygiene kits and school kits which were then delivered by members of our team from the hub here in Johnstown to Salt Lake. We are so grateful!

Last year we received the sad news that the Salt Lake Depot was closing indefinitely and suddenly transporting kits became cost prohibitive as the closest Depot is in Louisiana. During the past year our efforts have been local – Covid-19 kits distributed by a local food pantry, hygiene kits for seniors and domestic abuse victims, and most recently a successful   diaper drive in association with United Way of Weld County.

The time has now come to reach beyond our local communities but look for a need closer to home. Our new designation is the United Methodist Church Disaster Response Team. The DRT will have the same feel as UMCOR in terms of mission and strategy and it is our sincere hope that we can continue to work together with you to provide a positive impact in the wake of disaster. We will be working in coordination with the Mountain Sky District as the Western Jurisdiction Disaster Response Coordinators. We have all felt the effect of the forest fires, now unfortunately a part of the ‘new normal’ in the western United States. The decision was made to build Fire Kits (by combining two UMCOR lists out of California and adding some additional items) to be distributed to those individuals impacted by wildland or house fires.

Due to the number of items needed for each kit/bucket, the preferred method of donating is monetary, as we can then purchase in bulk, bringing the cost of each kit to $90.00. You can  make cash/check donations to UMC Johnstown with (Fire Kits in the memo line for checks) or through online giving. Gifts may also be given online at this link. Additionally, if your would like to purchase items, you can find a list on our website, and on this Amazon Wish List. Donations are tax deductible.

We will be building a small number of kits on September 5th, but as donations come in, we plan to build more kits and will welcome your help when those kits are assembled.

God bless you for your generosity.

Susan Jordan

UMCOR supports Afghans in need

For more than 40 years Afghanistan has been wracked by wars, civil strife, invasion and massive amounts of arms shipped in from outside forces. It is one of the poorest countries in the world, with high infant and maternal mortality rates, and millions of Afghans have been displaced as refugees over these many years. Today the country is again at a point of transition with great uncertainty about the future. Thousands of Afghans are seeking to flee violence and a fear of persecution. Roland Fernandes, general secretary of Global Ministries and UMCOR, expressed his sympathy for the Afghan people, stating: “The situation in Afghanistan is uncertain and unfolding. It is a tragedy of epic proportions. We pray especially for all of those left behind who now live in fear and for the many communities across Afghanistan also facing extended drought and hunger.”

A prayer as I put on my mask

Due to the prevalence of the delta variant which has led to an increasing positivity rate in Boulder County and the surrounding counties, St. Paul's UMC is requiring everyone to wear facemasks in our worship services
and small group activities.

(see this link for more)

Creator,
As I prepare to go into the world,
Help me to see the sacrament
in the wearing of this cloth -
Let it be "an outward sign
Of an inward grace" -
A tangible and visible way of living
Love for my neighbors,
As I love myself.
Christ,
Since my lips will be covered,
Uncover my heart,
That people wold see my smile
In the crinkles around my eyes.
Since my voice may be muffled,
Heko me to speak clearly,
Not only with my words,
But with my actions.
Holy Spirit,
As the elastice touches my ears,
Remind me to listen carefully -
And full of care -
To all those I meet.
May this simple piece of cloth
Be a shield and banner,
And each breath that it holds,
Be filled with Your love.
In Your love and
In the name of love
I pray.
May it be so. May it be so.

(The Rev. Dr. Richard Bott, moderator of the United Church of Canada,
is the author of this beautiful prayer.)
