This medical handbook on display in the museum was published in 1747 by John Wesley. It is called ‘Primitive Physic, or an easy method of curing most diseases’. He wanted people who couldn’t afford a doctor to be able to treat themselves at home. It became the most popular medical book of its time: going into 23 editions and selling over one million copies.
It is fascinating to see how far science and medicine have come, and to appreciate the effective remedies that were already available.
