Devotional for December 10

UMH #236

Being of a farm background I can appreciate the work and boredom of tending animals. I can only imagine the shepherds sitting hunched over nodding with sleep as the night crawled by. After visiting the shepherds’ fields near Bethlehem I can close my eyes and visually see shepherds and sheep on such a hillside. Most places giving an account of Jesus’s birth no longer exist as they did 2000 years ago which made me it in awe at this site. The paintings in the “tent”-shaped exhibit room (designed by Antonio Barluzzi) near the fields represents the intense fear the shepherds felt as the angels descended. The impact of this experience prompted the shepherds to take the “trip” which would have been an enormous adventure of faith.

The Shepherds’ Fields are my very favorite spot in the Holy Land.
