Devotional for December 23

UMH #224

This song reminds me of when we used to go Christmas caroling. Not the whole choir but a small group of people who love to sing. It would start as a party at a friend’s house. We’d warm up and eat. It varied from year to year what we'd do next. Some years we’d go caroling at the homes of friends in the neighborhood near St. Paul’s. It was great fun when people came to the door to see who the Carolers were.

Some years we’d pile in cars and go to the homes of shut-ins to serenaded them.

Most years we would go to an assisted living home like Golden-West manor or Boulder Manor or other similar places. The harmonies among those of us singing familiar Christmas songs is a memory I treasure. The delighted faces of the people who came to the door to see us as we passed. And so the words to this song bring back memories of singing “Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice.”

May this Christmas bring you many treasured memories.
