Devotional for December 1

Lamp

"Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. When I feel afraid, think I’ve lost my way, still you’re there right beside me, and nothing will I fear as long as you are near…"

These words from one of my favorite hymns are based on Psalms 119:105. Lamps bring light, and light feels like hope. And hope is what keeps us going through years like this one.

A lighted oil lamp has also long been a symbol for academic learning. I used to think “Thy Word” in the chorus of the hymn was referring only to the Bible, which contains so many lessons for our lives. But God speaks to us in other ways, too. We just need to listen and find the light.

In Matthew 5:16 Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
