Devotional for December 14

Fish

The fish was a symbol used by the early Christian church during a time of persecution. It was made up of the letters I X O Y E, which are the Greek letters for fish. The Christians turned it into an acronym for “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior” since Jesus talks to his disciples about being fishers of men. This fish symbol allowed Christians to know they were talking with a fellow Christian.

In high school I was part of an after school Bible study group, and one or two of the members who were taking shop class made fish symbols for those of us in the group.

How blessed we are that we live in a time when we don’t have to wear symbols to know it is safe to talk openly about our faith.
