Eastern Cross
The Eastern Cross has been a symbol of the Russian Orthodox Church since 1551. This cross has two horizontal bars perpendicular and one bar slanted. The top bar is shorter and represents the sign that hung above Jesus (INRI: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”). The slanted bar at the bottom of the cross represents the footrest. The right side of the footrest is always a bit higher than the left. This is to remind us that the thief to Jesus’s right repented and was given a place in heaven while the other thief did not repent and went to hell. This slanted bar is a reminder of the scale of justice which points the way to heaven or hell.
