Devotional for December 17

We have heard about the good news of Jesus coming to the shepherds. The shepherds were right there on the hills above Bethlehem, so they didn’t have very far to go to see Jesus. But in a distant country, in the East, wise men heard that Jesus was going to be born, and they went in search of him, just following a star shining in the sky. They wanted to go there to see a king—it’s thrilling to see someone so special—and bring him gifts.

They had to go a long, long way, with no certainty that they would even find him. They had no maps. There was nobody to ask if they got lost. Today it’s so much easier for us to find Jesus. We can come to church. We can read about him in the Bible.

And it’s easier for us to give gifts to him. We give him gifts when we give gifts to those who are in need right here in Boulder. And we give him the best gift of all when we give him our hearts.
