Devotional for December 6

The Bible is a didactic tool that guides me towards a more Christian life. Each time I revisit one of its stories, such as that of the Nativity, I gain new insights. We know much about Jesus and his mother Mary, but what about Jesus’ father?

What do we know about Joseph? The Gospels rarely mention Jesus’ earthly father. He was from Nazareth, a descendant of David, and was a “tekton,” or artisan, of wood, metal, or stone. Joseph most likely died when Jesus was young. What can we learn from his life? He dutifully moved his family to safety when asked to by God and obediently paid his taxes. He did not publicly humiliate Mary when she became pregnant. Luke 2:52 states Joseph helped Jesus grow “in wisdom and stature.”

Jesus was blessed to have Joseph as his father. He was faithfully obedient to God, respected his government’s laws, was kind to others, and took his responsibility as a parent seriously. Never in the limelight, he lived a godly life of caring, support, and nurturing. Life is about loving one-another—pass it on….
