Revelation 5:5 (New Matthew Bible) “And one of the elders said to me, Weep not! Behold, a lion being of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loosen the seven seals thereof.”
Judah was one of the sons Jacob, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Early in his life, Judah and his brothers plotted to kill their brother Joseph but sold him into slavery instead. Later in his life, Judah became a leader of his brothers, and in dealings with Joseph, Judah was willing to sacrifice himself to save the life of their youngest brother, Benjamin. Judah’s actions in these dealings are compared to Jesus sacrificing himself for others, although Jesus did not have the bad behavior in his background.
His father, Jacob, blessed Judah and called him a lion. In other stories about Judah, he is strong, majestic, and capable. Jesus was descended from the line of Judah.
Jesus is compared to the lion of Judah. I saw a video recently of a full-grown lion roaming a street with parked cars. The lion was easily half as big as any of the cars. It was impressive to see the command, the power, and the majesty of the lion and to see the metaphor of calling Judah, or Jesus, the lion of Judah.
