Devotional for the Second Sunday of Advent

John 10:11 (Lexham English Bible) “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

I love the images of the shepherd in scripture, from the 23rd Psalm to the story of the shepherds visiting the newborn baby Jesus. I imagine a shepherd was a common sight in the Holy Land in Jesus’s time, so it makes sense he uses the image in this scripture. It’s a comforting image to be watched over, protected, sought when lost, led to green pastures. Of course I love all the music referencing shepherds, with “He shall feed his sheep like a shepherd” and “While shepherds watched their flocks by night” being especially good ones. But while the disciples don’t know it yet, of course, in this scripture, Jesus is referencing when he won’t be shepherd, but a lamb.
