Romans 10:12-13 (Good News Translation) “This includes everyone, because there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles; God is the same Lord of all and richly blesses all who call to him. As the scripture says, ‘Everyone who calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.’”
Historically speaking, referring to one as “Lord” suggests a distinct power dynamic. In the Middle Ages, lords ruled over the people on their land, requiring fealty, exacting tribute, and enacting justice in exchange for the use of some part of the lord’s land. Lords could even compel their vassals to serve in military campaigns. This relationship, however, had another component. Lords were also responsible for the welfare of the people in their charge, providing protection from enemies and charity for those in need. Of course not all lords held up their end of the deal, and many were absent from their lands at length. But then, just as now, there was another Lord to whom the people answered. That Lord is always present, and that Lord is the one we can always turn to when we need Him. This is the greatest Lord of all, and one to whom I am happy to be a vassal.
