John 6:25 (Common English Bible) “Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’”
I love making yeast rolls. I can imagine the dry yeast coming to life when given warm water and sugar. Under a microscope, you could see the oval cells budding off new yeast and the mixture growing. If you looked at an even higher magnification, you could see the insides of the cell changing and preparing to divide into new cells. As new cells are added, the yeast mixture grows and grows, and if added to flour with a little more water, the mixture would become a dough that would double in size. I imagine Christ’s Church to be like that bread dough. A small amount of yeast with the sugar and water of God’s word, spirit, healing, and more that the Holy Spirit provides can take us “flour people” and allow us to grow and multiply. The Church has many challenges today, and most of us are not so hungry that a meal of bread fills us and leaves us longing for more. Unlike those people who heard Jesus speak and were fed by the miracle of the loaves and fishes, we are believing but not so excited or loud that we must share what we have learned, or we cannot be heard above the fancy breads and pastries available. How can we who are Christ’s “flour people” manage to be tasted over the false prophets of fruit cake and doughnuts?
